Another cause of the civil war was the argument of states rights. Most people in the southern states wanted their own power. They didn't want to be told what to do and they definitely did not like the idea of a group of people with more power than everyone else. Another reason the south was for state rights was they would be able to own slaves. The northern states did not support state rights because they had no reasoning to support it. The north didn't have to worry about losing slaves because of a central government because they didn't have slaves. The north thought having a strong government was important because they were willing to follow the laws set for them by the central government.
The Missouri Compromise The Missouri compromise was an agreement made by Henry Clay stating that Missouri was allowed to enter the union as a slave state and Main to enter as a free state and outlawed slavery in any state or territory north of a certain latitude.
